Mpakadan Electricity Project

Mpakadan Electricity Project

Introduction

The EWB Mpakadan, Ghana project aims to electrify the homes, businesses, and schools of the rural village of 500 people to boost development within the area. In collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Columbia EWB will connect 35 households and 6 businesses and schools to the main electricity grid in Ghana. This project will give the children in this community a more equitable education, since the installation of lights and access to electronics locally will spare them the hour walk to the nearest village to work on their homework, and promote more business expansion into the community.

Currently, the project has raised all $38,000 for full electrical installation and recently went on the Implementation Trip to begin this work. The completion of the electrical installation is expected to be at the end of this summer.

Project Goals

  1. Contribute to the design of the subsystem adhering to all Ghana and international electrical standards
  2. Connect all households to the grid, including extending poles within reach to all households and installing ECG meters
  3. Help with in-home wiring
  4. Install streetlights on the main roads of Mpakadan
  5. Promote education and safety on electrical systems
