Current Projects
Mpakadan Electricity Project
The EWB Mpakadan, Ghana project aims to electrify the homes, businesses, and schools of the rural village of 500 people to boost development within the area. In collaboration with the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG), Columbia EWB will connect 35 households and 6 businesses and schools to the main electricity grid in Ghana. This project will give the children in this community a more equitable education, since the installation of lights and access to electronics locally will spare them the hour walk to the nearest village to work on their homework, and promote more business expansion into the community.
Obodan Preschool Project
The Obodan Preschool Project was initiated by Columbia University’s Engineers Without Borders (CU-EWB) chapter in Fall 2024. Obodan is a rural community of approximately 300 households located in Ghana’s Eastern Region. The community's existing preschool structure has become unsafe, particularly during the rainy season, and is in urgent need of reconstruction.
In partnership with a local NGO and Ghanaian engineers, CU-EWB is supporting the design and construction of a permanent preschool facility. The project encompasses architectural and structural design, grant writing and fundraising, and community engagement. The primary objective is to provide a safe, durable, and accessible learning environment for young children in Obodan, thereby expanding early childhood education opportunities within the community.
